Medication Safety
Effective: January 2026
At The Nuvia Clinic, your safety and well-being are our top priorities. Below is important safety information about medications commonly used in our weight management and metabolic health programs. This information is meant to support, not replace, guidance from your Nuvia Clinic healthcare provider.
So what does this mean for the general population? We all need to double down on prevention. Here is a summary of the guidelines the Center for Disease Control has put in place for you, your family, and your community to help prevent the disease from spreading.
General Medication Safety Guidelines
Many medications used in weight loss and metabolic care, such as GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists, may interact with other drugs or medical conditions. You should always share your full medical history and all medications (including prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, and supplements) with your Nuvia Clinic provider before starting any new therapy.

GLP-1 / GIP Medications: What You Need to Know
Medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide used in weight management are powerful tools when combined with lifestyle changes and clinical oversight. However, they may have side effects and specific safety considerations.
Important Safety Considerations
■ Risk of Thyroid C-Cell Tumors
In animal studies, some medications in this class have been associated with thyroid C-cell tumors. The risk in humans is not fully known. Tell your provider if you notice lumps or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath.
■ Who Should Not Use These Medications
These medications are generally not recommended if you:
- Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
- Have a history of pancreatitis
- Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
- Are using other GLP-1 or GIP receptor agonist medications concurrently without provider guidance
(This includes brand-name products such as Wegovy®, Ozempic®, Saxenda®, Zepbound®, Mounjaro®, Victoza®, Byetta®, and similar therapies.)
■ Special Populations
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
Weight loss medications are typically not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to unknown risks. Discuss family planning with your provider before starting treatment.
Children (<18 years):
Safety and effectiveness have not been established in pediatric populations unless under direct clinical supervision.
Drug Interactions and Timing
Because some medications slow gastric emptying, they may impact the absorption of other oral drugs. Your Nuvia Clinic provider will advise how to schedule your medicines to reduce interactions. Examples include:
- Diabetes medications (e.g., insulin, sulfonylureas)
- Oral contraceptives
- Vitamins, supplements, or herbal products
Always consult your clinician before stopping or changing the timing of any medication.
Common Side Effects to Watch For
Most side effects are mild and may lessen over time, but you should report anything concerning:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
- Abdominal discomfort
- Headache or dizziness
- Injection-site reactions
- Signs of dehydration (e.g., dry mouth, lightheadedness)
Seek immediate care if you experience:
- Severe abdominal pain (possible pancreatitis or gallbladder issues)
- Symptoms of severe allergic reactions
- Signs of low blood sugar (in people with diabetes)
- New or worsening mood changes, including thoughts of self-harm
Your Nuvia Clinic provider can help you distinguish expected effects from signs that require urgent attention.
Monitoring and Follow-Up
Regular follow-up visits and ongoing communication with your provider help ensure the safest and most effective treatment outcomes. Always:
- Report new symptoms promptly
- Discuss any changes in your health
- Keep an updated list of all prescriptions and supplements
Important Reminders
- This information is not exhaustive. Complete safety details are available in full prescribing information for each medication.
- Do not share injection supplies.
- Contact The Nuvia Clinic immediately if you have concerns or emergency symptoms.
